The Legends of the Jews Vol I From The Creation to Jacob Louis Ginzberg 9781470090135 Books
I've always found many parts of the Bible puzzling yet strangely ignored by my Sunday school teachers. Who were the angels that mated with the daughters of man? What were the monstrous animals that tried to enter the ark? Why did God test Abraham and Isaac in this way? Why did Rachel steal the idols from her father? Why did an angel wrestle with Jacob and then bless him? In this work, Jewish scholar and Rabbi Ginzberg adds color that addresses many of these questions.Almost an encyclopedia of information from the body of Biblical writings, Ginzberg relates many fascinating, apocryphal stories, mentioning the sword of Methuselah, the magical garments of Nimrod, Enoch's book of knowledge, all told simply and in chronological order, a mix between history and ancient lore. Personalities are fleshed out- in my standard Bible Esau comes across as base, rash, foolishly tricked by Jacob, but in this book he's rebellious, irreverent, emotional, and delighted by worldly pleasures.
This book fills in some of the mysterious holes in the standard Bible but opens up a slew of questions of its own. Overall I found it fascinating, well researched, consistent with the other apocryphal works I've read, and written in totally accessible language. If you're interested in the Bible or Jewish legends, you will be enthralled by this book. The kindle edition seems identical to the print. Book 1 goes from the creation to the death of Isaac.

The Legends of the Jews Vol I From The Creation to Jacob Louis Ginzberg 9781470090135 Books Reviews
It’s a bit of a long book (and there are several volumes). This one covers up to Leah’s death. I like it although it can be a bit hard to read at times.
This book is further commentary on volumes 1-4 of THE LEGENDS OF THE JEWS. As true as it is for the 1st four volumes, the reader/scholar is provided with much more detailed information about Biblical characters, Jewish history, and Jewish religion, making the Scripture come alive and make more sense to Christians and others who are students of both the Old and New Testaments! Exciting reading and its hard to put the work down once you've started to read it! Five Stars for sure!
So I have a format problem with this book, which you will not realize until you buy it. It is really a manuscript with very low quality type setting, since there is way too much content on one huge page with hardly any breaks - thus making it very difficult to read and follow, and I have 5--50 vision, and I have never had that as an issue come up for me. Secondly, this looks like an print job and more importantly the translation is crude. Disappointed...you get what you pay for in this case.
There are many stories in here that I have heard alluded to but never had an exact idea where it came from. For instance, the story of "Lilith" as the first wife of Adam and the idea of the 7 heavens, legendary accounts of the fall from Eden and the death of Abel. I haven't read it all but what I have read has been enlightening.
As the book says, these are published as "legends" and not scripture but some of these legends have gained public awareness and it is nice to know their origins.
I have all volumes of the set and they provide fascinating insight into old Jewish traditions and oratory. These are in other words, among the 'back stories' of the Bible, along with Book of Jubilees and etc.
Louis Ginzberg's landmark seven-volume "The Legends of the Jews" assembles the many elaborations and embellishments of Biblical stories that flourished in the centuries following the Bible's own creation.
Ginzberg devoted most of his life to gathering these legends from their original sources - written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Syrian, Aramaic, Ethiopic, Arabic, Persian, and Old Slavic - and reproducing them completely, accurately, and vividly. He presents them in their traditional Biblical sequence and reconciles the sometimes contradictory versions of the same stories found in different sources. In addition to four volumes of the legends themselves, The Legends of the Jews includes two indispensable volumes of notes, which provide the sources for every legend, as well as a comprehensive index to the people, places, and motifs found in the legends and their sources.
Originally published in German in the early 20th century and translated into English by Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah.
This book appears to be a print out of a PDF and has no imprint whatsoever. It is poorly bound, contains no table of contents and no references to footnotes, even though numbers appear in the text. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It is unnavigable and I am very displeased with the purchase.
