Loved it. The story kept my heart beating a mile a minute throughout most of it. Beth lives an ordinary life until her house gets robbed and things don't quiet down from there. Her more than average ex-boyfriend, the protector, enters the picture to protect her (of course). When he shows up things start to really heat up, and not just between them. Awesome story. In 'The Overnighter's Secrets',J.L. Salter took a real-life chance find by a friend and used it for inspiration in his first published novel.
A suitcase rescued by a dumpster-diver that is found to contain photos and memorabilia of a silent film actress is the springboard for this novel, adult in situation, without 'adult' scenes.It contains everything you would expect in a romance,(i.e.,romance, best friends, former lovers, suspicion, self-evaluation and growth), and crime,(good guys, bad guys,action,suspense).Throw in dirty politics, old secrets and some timely problems and you have everything you could hope to find in a modern-day romance novel.
I enjoyed this novel! I thought it had a little bit of everything. It had suspense, action, history, romance, and mystery. I think that anyone looking for something to keep them on the edge of their seats should pick this up! It's not too long and there wasn't any point that threw me out of the story or where I thought, "Okay, I'm done with this for now." I thought the love story was really good, even if it frustrated me. I didn't really understand why they had broken up in the first place. I thought at least Shane's reasons for that were a little lame, but otherwise I loved their connection. I've always been a sucker for reunited love. I really enjoyed all of the history and detail that went into everything that was in the overnighter. It was really cool. I felt like I was investigating right along with them. I thought the suspense was just right. It creeped me out, but didn't freak me out too much. I loved the librarian character, although I felt like he was a little too sensitive. I find it hard to believe that him being black would really matter that much in the setting they were in. (But maybe that's just my opinion.) It's really cool that this was based off of a true story and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good bit of action and mystery in their reading. ) Read this review or request your book be reviewed here http//paperbacksandfrosting.com
This is an awesome story! I enjoyed every page of it and look forward to more publications by Jeff. Mr. Salter is a talented artist who obviously researches his subject matter in detail. Loved it!!
Who'd have thought an old overnight case could hide such big secrets? This one did - and it's great fun watching the tale unravel as Beth and her friends become involved - or should I say "entangled" in its secrets? The plot is interesting, fast moving, and has just the right amount of "meat" to keep the reader involved to the end. Just enough romance for those who enjoy romances, plenty of mystery, historical tie-in, and a fast pace will all keep readers turning pages all the way to the finish.
Based on a real incident in which pictures and documents of an old silent film movie star were found in a dumpster, Salter created a mystery in which these are tied to several murders, past and present. When Beth Muse's home is broken into by a man seemingly in search of a journal, she longs for the protection of her ex-boyfriend, a biker named Shane. Turns out he has had the same experience. The link is an old suitcase full of memorabilia that Beth accidently took when her when they split. As Shane rides to her rescue, Beth and her interesting friends find the case and begin to work on why anyone would want the contents. The relationship between Shane and Beth has passed beyond passion to two older people trying to figure out if they can make their lives together. Both the romance and the mystery are long, slow reveals that end in an explosive act of violence in which Shane proves he would die for his lady. Not to be missed is Shane's explanation of how men check out women in a bar, and Beth's librarian friend who unravels much of the mystery and finds his inner hero exactly when he needs to.
Romance, Suspense and Action
At first captivated by the idea of a story around an old suitcase
and its contents, my interest was rocketed to a peak by the
suspense the author created and the intimated malevolence that
began to hover around the characters. I was stopped in my tracks
(reading) when it got so scary I began hearing things around the
house, inside and out, but I couldn't stay away for long.

Completely carried away with the suspense and the weaving
of the different story lines, I truly enjoyed the read. The author
has crafted a very, very well done, effective tale and created both
appealing and despicable characters equally as well. The scenes were easily
envisioned and visceral, commanding all the senses.
I certainly recommend it!
The Overnighter's Secrets combines several people and their individual stories, bringing them together as all of the threads are tied at the end. I couldn't wait to find out what was in the suitcase, and once I did, I couldn't wait to find out why it was so important. This is a great story with lots of heart and imagination. And I didn't even know parts of it were based on fact until I read the end! That made it doubly interesting for me.
